A beautiful kitchen can be let down by a specification that has not accounted for everyday use. A cabinet may look right in a showroom but prove awkward around a tight corner; an appliance can meet a wish list but lack the ventilation or service access it needs. This guide to fitted kitchen specification explains the decisions that turn an attractive concept into a kitchen that performs well for years.

For a full replacement project, specification is not simply choosing finishes. It is the detailed record of how the room will work: the cabinetry, appliances, worktops, lighting, services and installation requirements, all considered together. Getting these decisions right early protects the design intent, budget and programme.

Begin with the room, not the furniture

An accurate site survey is the foundation of a reliable kitchen specification. Wall lengths and ceiling heights matter, but so do details that can be easy to miss: window reveals, uneven floors, chimney breasts, soil pipes, radiator positions, structural columns and the direction of door swings. Existing electrical and plumbing locations should be assessed, rather than assumed to be suitable for the new layout.

This is also the point to understand how the household uses the room. A kitchen for a family that cooks every evening needs different priorities from one designed principally for entertaining. Storage for bulk groceries, children’s snacks, formal tableware or small appliances should be planned around real habits. The best layouts reduce unnecessary movement without making the room feel over-filled.

In open-plan homes, the kitchen must work as part of a wider space. Sightlines from a sitting or dining area, noise from extraction and dishwashers, and where guests naturally gather all influence the specification. An island can be a strong focal point, for example, but only if it allows comfortable circulation and provides a useful purpose, such as preparation space, seating or concealed storage.

Cabinetry usually represents the largest visual element in the room, so it deserves attention beyond door colour and handle choice. Specify the cabinet construction, door style, finish, internal fittings, plinth treatment and end panels as a coordinated package. These details determine how refined the finished installation feels.

Door finishes involve practical trade-offs. Matt painted doors can offer a soft, tailored appearance, while darker or very matt colours may show fingerprints more readily. Veneer brings warmth and natural variation, but each batch should be considered carefully to achieve an even result across larger elevations. Lacquered finishes can give a crisp contemporary look, although their suitability will depend on the level of use and the desired character of the home.

Storage should be designed from the inside out. Deep drawers make pans, crockery and dry goods easier to access than low cupboards with fixed shelves. Tall units may accommodate larder storage, integrated refrigeration or ovens, but their scale needs balancing against the room’s natural light. Corner solutions should earn their place: sometimes a well-planned drawer run is more useful and more cost-effective than complex corner hardware.

Pay particular attention to visible transitions. End panels should align with door fronts where appropriate, and filler panels should be proportioned rather than treated as an afterthought. Handle positions, grain direction and the junction between furniture and architecture all contribute to a precise finish.

Choose appliances around how you live

Appliances should be selected alongside the layout, not after the cabinetry has been finalised. Their dimensions, ventilation requirements and door clearances can affect the entire design. A freestanding range cooker, for instance, has very different spatial and extraction implications from a bank of built-in ovens.

Consider capacity before features. A large household may benefit from full-height refrigeration, a second dishwasher or separate cooling for drinks, while a smaller household may prefer more prep space and simpler appliance provision. Steam ovens, warming drawers and wine conditioning are valuable where they suit the way you cook and entertain, but they should not displace more useful storage merely because they are available.

Extraction requires especially careful planning. Recirculating systems can be appropriate where ducting is impractical, but they need the right filters and ongoing maintenance. Ducted extraction is often highly effective, subject to the route, external grille location and building constraints. The specification should establish the solution early, particularly where ceiling hoods, downdraft systems or a cooker on an island are proposed.

Allow for service access too. Refrigeration, dishwashers, water filters and boiling-water taps all need sensible provision for maintenance. A well-considered project anticipates the moments after installation as well as the day the kitchen is completed.

Worktops, splashbacks and the details you touch

Worktop material shapes both the visual language and daily care requirements of a fitted kitchen. Natural stone has distinctive movement and character, but some varieties require sealing and may be susceptible to staining or etching. Sintered stone and porcelain are highly durable options with a wide range of finishes, although edge detailing and fabrication must be handled carefully. Quartz offers consistency and practicality, but should not be exposed to excessive direct heat.

The thickness, edge profile and overhang all change the appearance of the worktop. A slim contemporary profile can feel elegant, while a deeper edge gives more visual weight. On an island, the support required for a seating overhang should be specified properly rather than left to be resolved on site.

Splashbacks should be considered at the same time. A full-height stone splashback can create a calm, continuous backdrop, whereas tiles introduce texture and pattern. If a shelf, upstand, window sill or decorative niche is included, every junction needs to be drawn and agreed. This is where a design moves from a collection of good products to a coherent room.

Plan lighting and services as part of the design

Lighting is most successful when it is layered. General lighting provides an even base, task lighting makes worktops practical, and decorative lighting brings atmosphere to dining or island areas. Relying on ceiling downlights alone often produces a flat room and can leave work surfaces in shadow.

The kitchen specification should identify fitting locations, switching groups, dimming and colour temperature before the electrical work begins. Under-cabinet lighting, illuminated shelving and pendant lights each need cable routes and drivers positioned discreetly. Lighting should also respond to the architecture: a pendant that looks right over a long island may overwhelm a compact one.

Power points deserve equally thoughtful placement. Include sockets where small appliances will genuinely be used, along with charging points and provision for a vacuum, if required. Pop-up sockets and concealed outlets can keep an island clear, but they must be selected with practicality and water safety in mind.

Plumbing, heating and ventilation must be coordinated with the cabinet plan. Moving a sink or adding an island can require new pipe routes and floor work. Underfloor heating, radiators and tall cabinetry should be planned together so that comfort is not compromised by the finished layout.

Specify installation, not just products

Even the finest furniture and materials depend on accurate installation. A complete specification should make clear who is responsible for surveying, delivery, fitting, worktop templating, electrical work, plumbing, decorating and final appliance commissioning. It should also establish the order of works, especially where flooring, plastering or structural alterations are involved.

Tolerances matter. Older homes in Surrey and South West London often have walls and floors that are not perfectly true, and a considered design allows for this without creating conspicuous gaps or uneven lines. Clear site management and regular communication reduce the risk of late changes that affect cost or programme.

Before placing an order, review drawings, finishes, appliance models and key dimensions carefully. This is the moment to test practical questions: Can the dishwasher be unloaded without blocking a route? Does the fridge door open fully? Is there room to pull out a bin beside the island? Small checks prevent expensive corrections later.

A fitted kitchen should feel effortless once it is in use. That result comes from taking the time to specify the details that are rarely noticed individually, but are appreciated every day.
